No. You do not have to have "faith" or a positive attitude for acupuncture to work. It is not magic or "voo-doo" nor is it a placebo effect. Acupuncture works by regulating the qi in the meridians of the body. One theory is that meridians occupy the spaces between the fascia, or connective tissue that covers the muscles and organs in a three-dimensional pattern. By needling the points on the meridians, I am giving your brain very precise physiological instructions, like a custom computer program, for your brain to execute. The only thing you have to do is show up for your appointment and do your best to relax and listen to my instructions during the session. There are plenty of studies that have shown acupuncture works; we also use MRI technology to pinpoint which parts of the brain and body are activated when specific points are needled. We use science to prove that acupuncture is effective, not faith.
Yes! Although acupuncture needles are small, sterile and safe, some people are still afraid to receive the health benefits of acupuncture because they think it will hurt. Many of my patients feel a small tap or slight sting when the needle is first inserted, but goes away almost instantly. Many patients don't feel anything, and that is normal too. Acupuncture needles are the width of your hair, and solid, which means they are usually a lot less painful than the typical shot or having blood drawn, which uses larger, hollow needles.
If you are still afraid to have acupuncture done, check out my page on auricular therapy. Using tiny seeds or crystals on band-aids, I can still treat your health concerns using reflex points on your ear. The crystal seeds are great for prom, weddings or other occasions that may be stressful. Only you know what the crystal seeds actually do, because to everyone else they look like beautiful jewelry. The crystal seeds come in all colors of the rainbow, so they can be matched for your outfit or personal tastes. They last for five days.
You can also get Japanese-style acupuncture at my clinic. Instead of inserting needles INTO the skin, I can tape the needles ON the skin. Using ion pumping cords, I can move the "qi" from one point to another depending on what you need to have balanced without breaking the skin. This type of treatment style is suitable for everyone, but it is especially helpful for those who have needle phobias or religious objections to piercing the skin.
Your acupuncture or bodywork session will take place in a warm, comfortable, quiet room. Soft music may be played to help you relax. You will lie on a table especially designed for your comfort.
Before your acupuncture session starts, I will tell you what items of clothing need to moved around to access the arms and legs. I typically needle the head, arms from the elbows down, and the legs from the knees down. But sometimes I need to needle shoulders or further up the leg; in those situations I have a towel to appropriately cover and drape you to maintain your privacy and keep you comfortable with the temperature. Most of the time, if you come dressed in loose-fitting workout attire, I can work around it quite easily. For back treatments, you may need to undress more, but again, you will be comfortably draped so that I can do my work while you maintain privacy and comfort, and we will discuss it prior to treatment to make sure you are comfortable with the process, too. We only move what clothing is required for me to access the points I think will work best for you.
Most massage and bodywork techniques are traditionally performed with the client unclothed; however, it is entirely up to you what you want to wear. You should undress to your level of comfort. You will be properly draped during the entire session.
The practitioner will leave the room while you undress, relax onto the table, and cover yourself with a clean sheet or towel.
You will be properly draped at all times to keep you warm and comfortable. Only the area being worked on will be exposed.
A typical full-body session will include work on your back, arms, legs, feet, hands, head, neck, and shoulders.
A relaxing Swedish massage is often a baseline for clients. In a general Swedish massage, your session may start with broad, flowing strokes that will help calm your nervous system and relax exterior muscle tension. As your body becomes relaxed, pressure will gradually be increased to relax specific areas and relieve areas of muscular tension. Often, a light oil or lotion is used to allow your muscles to be massaged without causing excessive friction to the skin. The oil also helps hydrate your skin. You should communicate immediately if you feel any discomfort so that another approach may be taken. Massage and bodywork are most effective when your body is not resisting.
There are numerous types of massage and bodywork; various techniques utilize different strokes, including basic rubbing strokes, rocking movement, posture and movement re-education, application of pressure to specific points, and more. We can discuss which methods may be most appropriate for you.
Prior to the acupuncture or massage, feel free to ask the practitioner any questions about the technique or the upcoming session. During the massage, make yourself comfortable. The practitioner will either gently move you or tell you what is needed throughout the session (such as lifting your arm). Many people just close their eyes and completely relax, communicating if/when they need more or less pressure, another blanket, or anything else relevant to the session. If you have any questions regarding the session or about the particular technique you are receiving, feel free to ask.
Most people feel very relaxed. Some experience freedom from long-term aches and pains developed from tension or repetitive activity. After an initial period of feeling slowed down, people often experience increased energy, heightened awareness, and greater productivity which can last for days. Since toxins are released from your soft tissues during a massage, it is recommended you drink plenty of water following your massage.
Massage and bodywork can help release chronic muscular tension and pain, improve circulation, increase joint flexibility, reduce mental and physical fatigue and stress, promote faster healing of injured muscular tissue, improve posture, and reduce blood pressure. Massage and bodywork is also known to promote better sleep, improve concentration, reduce anxiety and create an overall sense of well-being.
Yes. That's why it's imperative that, before you begin your session, the practitioner asks general health questions. It is very important that you inform the practitioner of any health problems or medications you are taking. If you are under a doctor's care, it is strongly advised that you receive a written recommendation for massage or bodywork prior to any session. Depending on the condition, approval from your doctor may be required.
